What is Not By AI?

Not By AI is a badge that signals content was made mostly by humans. Creators who write, paint, make films, or produce other work can display it if at least 90% of the work is human-created; the remaining 10% may involve AI, such as for inspiration or grammar polishing. Three badge types are available — ‘Painted By Human’, ‘Written By Human’, and ‘Produced By Human’ — so you can match the badge to your medium. It is not a legal certification, but it helps audiences identify human-made work and encourages original creation over recycled AI material.

Who created Not By AI?

The project was founded by Allen Hsu, a designer and content creator based in Philadelphia with a background in UX design, writing, animation, and music. His goal is to champion original content and push back against the growing volume of AI-generated material, with the aim of international recognition for the platform and of empowering people to create authentic work so human creativity isn’t overshadowed by AI.

What is it used for, and who is it for?

The badge serves writers, researchers, artists, music producers, sound designers, and filmmakers who want to:

• Signal how much of a piece of content is human-made
• Highlight their human touch and showcase original work
• Promote original content creation and raise awareness for new work, helping keep content from becoming repetitive

The badges are designed for clear legibility and can be added to a blog or website.

How to use Not By AI

1. Check eligibility: At least 90% of your content must be human-generated. You can still use AI for inspiration or grammar checking.
2. Pick your badge: Choose ‘Painted By Human’, ‘Written By Human’, or ‘Produced By Human’ based on the kind of content you create.
3. Download it: Badges for artwork, articles, or audio/video content are available from the Not By AI website.
4. Add it to your site: Place the badge on your website or blog using HTML code.
5. Follow the guidelines: Display the badge unaltered, at a size that’s easy to read, and respect the clear space around it.
