What is Magenta Studio?

Magenta Studio is a MIDI plugin built specifically for Ableton Live. It is a toolkit with five tools — Continue, Groove, Generate, Drumify, and Interpolate — that apply Magenta’s AI models directly to your MIDI clips from Ableton Live’s Session View. It uses machine learning to help create music, making it useful for musicians and producers who want AI-powered creativity in their workflow. To run it, you need Ableton Live 10.1 Suite or a newer version; older versions require a separate version of Max 8.

How to use Magenta Studio?

1. Install: Make sure you have Ableton Live 10.1 Suite or later, then drag the Magenta Studio amxd file onto any MIDI track in Live.
2. Launch: Click the name of the tool you want in the plugin window.
3. Select clips: In Session View, select one or more clips on a MIDI track — the “Generate” button becomes active once clips are selected.

The Five Tools

• Continue: Extends existing clips by up to 32 measures without requiring specific input.
• Generate: Creates a fresh 4-bar phrase with no input; you choose where it lands.
• Interpolate: Blends two inputs on the same track (e.g., two drum beats or melodies) to create up to 16 new clips.
• Groove: Adjusts the timing and feel of a drum clip so it sounds more like a real drummer played it.
• Drumify: Takes a bassline (or other input) and suggests drum patterns that fit.

Other Features and Limitations

• Temperature slider: Controls how random the AI’s choices are — higher settings produce more variation.
• Limitations: Melody input works best with single notes (monophonic), and the drum mapping follows specific pitch ranges.
